With significant layoffs looming at Clatsop Community College, faculty, administrators, and the public
are gathering weekly to discuss the situation and provide information about restoring teaching jobs.
This in a fun setting that anyone can come to, at the Fort George Lovell Taproom, and the brewery is
donating a dollar from each pint sold during Happy Hour for Higher Ed, Fridays 3-6 p.m., to a faculty
fund, which is dedicated toward maximizing faculty positions.Following the news that 15 of CCC’s 39 full-time faculty would be cut as of spring term, due to a
recession-induced budget gap, faculty members approached Fort George Brewery, and incepted
the idea, Happy Hour for Higher Ed. It will provide a neutral spot for stakeholders to meet and an
opportunity for the college to provide public outreach. Administrators have also met with Fort George
and CCC President, Dr. Larry Galizio, says he’s grateful for those showing concern for the well-being of
the college, and supportive of the event.“This is a great opportunity for community members to show their support and appreciation for Clatsop
CC faculty and staff,” Galizio said.Fort George Co-owner, Chris Nemlowill, is pleased to contribute space and proceeds to the college
and he hopes this will spur support from other individuals and businesses as well. Nemlowill feels the
college is extremely important for the community, providing a reason for young people with energy and
work skills to remain in Clatsop County. He speaks from personal experience, a transfer graduate of
CCC, has had a hand in creating a business from scratch, in his hometown Astoria, employing 40 people.“I don’t feel I would be where I’m at today if it weren’t for Clatsop Community College,” Nemlowill said.
Nancy Cook, a writing instructor at CCC, says Happy Hour for Higher Ed is a way for those who value the
college to do something proactive during these tough times.“This is a special community and I think we can come together to find solutions to support the college.
It’s a way I’m maintaining a sense of hope in this crisis,” Cook said.Happy Hour for Higher Ed continues Fridays through March 23rd at the Fort George Lovell Taproom 3-
6 p.m. (in Astoria, Oregon). March 23rd is when faculty layoffs would be effective, unless circumstances
change substantially. Already Columbia Memorial Hospital and Providence have stepped up with
donations, and there’s an opening for other businesses and individuals to do the same. One dollar from
each pint of Fort George beer you purchase at Happy Hour for Higher Ed will go into the faculty fund.
