It's Beer O'Clock! BeerGyver's 5 Things To Do With A Beer Box

BeerGyver (Kerry Finsand of Taplister.com) is at it again! This time, he’s got 5 different DIY projects that use a box that formerly carried beer. Or several. Take a look, but remember, kids: some of these you should not try at home!

1. Beer Audio Speaker: Learn how to convert a Corona box into
a speaker.

Here is what you need.

1. Glue gun with glue sticks
2. Exacto knife
3. Two speakers 1 small woofer about 3/12" (The woofers optional
4. A box (I suggest beer box) Extra cardboard.
5. A lablor (Instructions on last page)
6. Screws
7. Saudering Iron
8. PATIENCE!

As the site says this is not a simple DIY project, but are sure some
listeners wouldn’t mind taking a shot at it. In fact I challenge a listener to
make this and then do a video of them listening to your show with their
creation. (Send a video of your beer speaker actually working to real(dot)beergoddess(at)gmail(dot)com and BeerGyver and I will pick the one we think is best and take you out for a beer!)

2. Transformers Optimus Prime Halloween Costume. Nuff said!

3. Turn a suitcase of beer into a useful computer! . Peter Jebe wanted to build his own computer, but never could find a computer case that was affordable and personalized. After having a few beers he decided that he would create a computer with a Miller Genuine Draft Box as the case. He then enlisted his father and friend Noah and three Sundays later they created a very unique computer.

They did not just put a computer in a box, but rather designed the computer to fix in the box. The power button is a MGD cap, you can see the power light through the box and on the box side of the computer there is access to all of the ports. It even has a cd-rom drive that comes out the front.

4. How about a Beer Pavilion?

This lovely structure was created by students from the University of Applied Sciences in Detmold, Germany for their computer modeling class. They used 2,000 plastic beer crates to build this structure that was used during the summer for on campus concerts. They filled the base blocks with concrete and used screws, slats and bracing for the upper part. The entire project took one week to finish. The crates were originally donated by a local brewery and when the temporary structure was taken down they were recycled.

5. And who doesn’t need a beer box cowboy hat?

You can watch the hat-making action on YouTube or follow step-by-step instructions right here. Or if you’re lazy, just buy one!

Heard On Beer O'Clock -- Links for 2/18/12

badbunny-bottleThis week, we heard from Portland’s Morton’s — the steakhouse. They are holding a fantastic-sounding beer and appetizer pairing event on Leap Day! What better way to enjoy the extra day (a whole 24 hours!) than taking in some wonderful eats and beery treats. You can get details and make a reservation here.

We also talked with Chris Baker of EyeLuvBeer. You can take a peek at his T-shirts and other clever creations here.

It was time for our monthly Homebrewers Corner and Jeremy of Steinbarts us about dry-hopping and when or when not to dump a beer. If you have homebrew questions, send ’em to me at real(dot)beergoddess(at)gmail(dot)com. I will make sure our homebrew gurus get them and we will share them on the air!

And our Beer of the Week: Alameda’s Bad Bunny Imperial Cream Ale — come sample it at Thatcher’s, 7906 SE Stark, on Tuesday — and enter to win a trip for two to Vegas!

George Washington's Beer

Gilbert_Stuart_Williamstown_Portrait_of_George_WashingtonIn honor of President’s Day weekend, I present you a real homebrew recipe from the Father of Our Country: George Washington. Not only could he not tell a lie, but he apparently was a pretty mean brewer in his day.

“To Make Small Beer:
Take a large siffer full of bran hops to your taste-boil these 3 hours. Then strain our 30 gall[o]n into a cooler put in 3 gall[o]n molasses while the beer is scalding hot or rather draw the molasses into the cooler. Strain the beer on it while boiling hot, let this stand till it is little more than blood warm. Then put in a quart of ye[a]st if the weather is very cold cover it over with a blank[et] let it work in the cask-Leave the bung open till it is almost done working-Bottle it that day week it was brewed.”

Cooler? Wow, I didn’t know Igloo made stuff to keep your beer on ice way back then. ;)

Cheers!

Beer O'Clock Goes To Spokane!

kyrs_community_radioGreat news! Our virtual pub we call Beer O’Clock will soon be heard in Spokane, Wash.!

Spokane has a thriving and growing craft beer community, and KYRS FM (92.3 and 88.1 FM) will be bringing Beer O’Clock to the region’s craft beer fans starting this (and every) Sunday at 5 p.m.!

I am thrilled that this community radio station (also a non-profit) is picking up the show and spreading the good beer gospel farther in our region than it has ever gone before, adding this station to the growing list of radio stations that are giving craft beer a voice!

So, let’s make sure to welcome our new pub mates and raise a toast to community radio KYRS FM in Spokane! Cheers!
